Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry, has become one of the largest film industries in the world and plays a significant role in shaping the social and cultural narratives of the nation. With its widespread influence, Nollywood movies have been a central part of the daily lives of millions of Nigerians, especially among the youth. These movies, often characterized by themes of romance, crime, politics, and family dynamics, are a primary form of entertainment for the youth in Nigeria. In recent years, studies have shown that films, including those from Nollywood, have profound effects on shaping the attitudes, values, and behaviors of young people (Ibrahim & Usman, 2024). Dala Local Government Area in Kano State is one such community where Nollywood movies have a significant impact on the youth, offering not only entertainment but also influencing their perceptions of social norms, career aspirations, and relationships. While some argue that Nollywood plays a positive role in education and societal cohesion, others express concerns about its potential to negatively influence youth behavior, particularly in terms of materialism, violence, and disrespect for traditional values (Adamu, 2023). This study seeks to explore the influence of Nollywood movies on youths in Dala Local Government Area, examining how these films shape their attitudes, lifestyle choices, and perceptions of societal norms.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While Nollywood movies are widely watched and celebrated for their entertainment value, there remains a gap in understanding how they influence the behavior and attitudes of youths in specific localities, such as Dala Local Government Area. Given the large viewership of Nollywood films in this area, it is essential to assess the potential impact these movies have on young people, especially regarding their social behavior, values, and life choices. Youths often imitate characters and situations portrayed in films, which can sometimes lead to the adoption of negative behaviors such as substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, and poor academic performance (Aliyu & Zubairu, 2024). On the other hand, positive representations in Nollywood can encourage social responsibility, ambition, and community involvement. Understanding the dual influence of Nollywood on the youth in Dala Local Government is crucial for shaping media literacy programs and ensuring that the positive aspects of media exposure are maximized, while mitigating the potential risks associated with negative portrayals. This study, therefore, aims to investigate the specific effects of Nollywood movies on youths in Dala and highlight the potential consequences of these influences on their future behavior and societal participation.
